Following a four-year respite from Trine University, Erica Hutton returned to continue her time here as an Assistant Professor in Criminal Justice and Director of the Cold Case Unit.

She thought of Trine University often while away and sought the right time to return to campus; planning, preparation, and alignment were necessary pillars for a successful transition back to the Midwest from the East Coast. Hutton taught on the Angola campus for 5 years and left in 2015, moving to the Trine Online campus for 4 years. While away, she had the opportunity to develop academic programs on the undergraduate and graduate levels at other universities while also serving as a Criminal Justice Program Director.

Hutton is a Criminal Psychologist that specializes in criminal profiling; she created the Trine University Cold Case Unit in Fall of 2024 to provide the opportunity to partner with law enforcement agencies in need of investigative assistance. The Cold Case Unit provides students with the opportunity to apply what they are learning within the classroom arena to real-life investigations that are complex in nature and riddled in unanswered questions.

Hutton endeavors to generate an exceptional classroom experience for her students that is interactive and enriching on many levels. Areas of specialization include forensic investigations, criminal profiling, victimology, criminology, forensic psychology, psychopathology, and the cultivation of deviant behaviors. During downtime, she enjoys traveling to the mountains, spending time with family and friends, adding to her repertoire of tattoos, painting pottery, and publishing research.
