Marissa Nichols never envisioned herself teaching mathematics during her formative years, but she expresses gratitude every day for the unexpected turn her life took. While she harbored an affinity for math in her youth, she had never contemplated pursuing it further. Marissa attended Millikin University in Illinois, initially focusing on business classes. However, her trajectory shifted when her attention gravitated towards her math courses. A pivotal moment occurred during her sophomore year when a statistics professor suggested she consider changing her major to math. Seizing the opportunity, Marissa changed her major that very week and never looked back. Despite facing challenges, she navigated through by asking questions, seeking support from peers and professors, and maintaining a rigorous study routine. Learning to seek assistance turned out to be the most beneficial decision she made.
Post-graduation, Marissa worked as a Business Analyst while concurrently taking graduate math classes. Although she enjoyed her work, she didn't foresee it as a lifelong career. The turning point came when she had the chance to join Eastern Illinois University full-time. This marked her introduction to teaching as she taught her first class as a graduate student. The experience solidified her passion for teaching, relishing the interaction with students and guiding them to enhance their confidence in math.
Having earned her master's degree, Marissa spent time at a community college before joining Trine University. She served in various capacities within the math department, starting as an Assistant Professor and eventually becoming the Chair. A job relocation prompted a move out of state, but Marissa continued working as an Adjunct with Trine Online before securing her current position as an Assistant Professor.
Reflecting on her journey, Marissa acknowledges the pivotal role her professor played in redirecting her path. This redirection not only led her to her current career but also facilitated meeting her husband. Grateful for her position at Trine University, Marissa finds joy in working with her students and advisees.
Outside of work, Marissa dedicates time to her family, including her dogs Mona-Lisa and Jean-Ralphio and her cat Emma. She enjoys crocheting hats for her husband, who may not have requested them but wears them nonetheless. Additionally, Marissa indulges her newfound baking skills, creating delectable treats because she has mastered the art and can't resist the urge to bake.
