How pleasing it is to see my students succeed, and how gratifying it is to lead them to success! Teaching has been my passion, and I have particularly loved teaching math.
At the turning point of exploring and choosing my career path, I was blessed to make the considerate decision of joining academia as both an avid learner and wisdom-seeker as well as a giver, who would passionately love to pass the gift on to the next generation, i.e., to our young scholars who are going to shape our future! I currently serve as a Professor of Mathematics, and Director of Study Abroad at Trine University. I have been teaching various college and university level math courses for the past 25 years. Along with serving as a past chair of the Mathematics & Physics Department, I have also had the honor of rendering my five-year stint of giving back to my community as a unanimously-elected president of the faculty at Trine University. I have enjoyed face-to-face, online, and blended modes of instruction. Together with teaching and research, I have also been fortunate to give back through my service on the national Editorial Board for Classroom Resource Materials of the Mathematical Association of America (MAA). Recently, I have been involved with the Editorial Board of the well-known Mathematics Magazine. Having served as Secretary in the past (2013-2019) for six consecutive years, I currently serve as a unanimously elected Chair of Indiana Executive Board of the MAA. Moreover, I serve on the governing body of the United States national Council on Undergraduate Research (CUR) as Chair of the Mathematical, Computing, and Statistical Sciences Division. There are multiple other forms and avenues through which I also keep trying to contribute and volunteer gladly and positively as a citizen. I feel very humbled and blessed to have been honored with several institutional teaching, service and scholarship awards, also including the MAA Distinguished Professor of Mathematics for College or University Teaching (Indiana-2016).
Treating myself as a student has always helped me learn and become both a better teacher and a better person. I greatly enjoy helping my students, aka “my friends” and equally enjoy learning from them. To have an idea of what “teaching” and “my students” mean to me, please view this brief video clip regarding my Barrenbrugge Award of overall excellence in teaching, service, and scholarship to see my response to a past VPAA’s the question “Haseeb, what do you really like about teaching here at Trine?” Being able to serve as a faculty advisor to three recognized student organization, namely the Trine Math Club (also a student chapter of the Mathematical Association of America), Trine Study Abroad Club, and Trine University Chapter of the Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society, has been a great pleasure. I am interested in a wide variety of mathematical applications. Being an advocate of DEIA in academia, I gladly serve as a mentor to several institutional, national, and international students. I love nature, outings with my family, and gardening.
2016 Barrenbrugge Award for Faculty Excellence
The 2016 Barrenbrugge Award for Faculty Excellence was presented to Haseeb Kazi, Ph.D., associate professor in the Department of Mathematics and Informatics. Established in 1984 and endowed by 1932 aeronautical engineering alumnus Charles C. Barrenbrugge, the award recognizes all-around excellence in teaching, scholarship and service to the university.
