Trine student headed to Ireland for summer internship

Robert Houskamp is going farther than most to complete the internship for his forensic science degree.

The Wyoming, Michigan, student will spend several weeks in Dublin, Ireland, this summer at Maynooth University, working in that university’s chemistry department.

“I’ve been interested in studying abroad for a couple of years now, and finding an opportunity to do so while fulfilling my internship requirements for graduation seemed like a fantastic idea,” he said.

“The project I am more interested in is using MoSe₂ (molybdenum diselenide) powder as a sensor to test for contaminants in water sources,” he said.

Positive reaction: High school students learn chemistry applications at Trine

Sixty-six high school students from six local schools enjoyed a day of chemistry- and chemical engineering-themed activities at a new Trine University event titled, “On TrAC: Trine Applications in Chemistry.”

Hosted by the McKetta Department of Chemical and Bioprocess Engineering and Department of Chemistry, the program took place Thursday, March 23.

The university invited high school Advanced Placement or dual credit Chemistry teachers to bring their advanced science classes to campus for the day.

Student activities, teacher resources

Students rotated through activities that included designing hands-on separation processes, seeing undergraduate research projects performed in chemistry and chemical Engineering labs, playing a Chemistry-themed Jeopardy game and speaking with college students majoring in the chemical sciences.

Internships

Students in the Bachelor of Science with a major in Chemistry program gain hands-on experience in our laboratories on a daily basis. An internship can further enhance this experience by giving you training in a specific industrial setting. Below are a couple of examples of students that took advantage of internships:

Julia Nell (class of 2013) completed a six-week intensive program in nuclear and radiochemistry at the National Nuclear Chemistry Summer School at the Brookhaven National Laboratories in New York.

Adam Tuttle, a 2011 graduate, completed an internship with Univertical Corporation. Univertical generates a variety of chemicals that supply the plating and the printed circuit board industries. This internship not only gave Adam the opportunity to practice his lab skills, it strengthened his problem-solving, organization and time-management skills, as well. Now, after graduation, he is employed as a full-time chemist at Univertical.
